I’m guessing that the comments were made in ignorance, which isn’t very comforting — that we have people running to represent us in government who are so ignorant of local history.
I grew up learning about pre-colonial politics (which to some degree carry on to this day), and the colonial system seemed so quaint by comparison.
Neither ignorance towards, nor or malice against, the people they’re supposed to represent should be permitted. Politicians should only ever argue policies against the policies’ merits, and not antagonize the people the policies affect.
